Hello food connoisseurs! Last weekend, particularly our lazy Sunday, we wanted to face the day with some satisfying food on our side! So, after my mom researched a couple places, we decided to go to a restaurant (based on a word-of-mouth recommendation) called Joy's Cafe in Atlanta. I was pretty much sold on the idea when I perused the menu and stumbled upon one of my favorites....a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup!
When we arrived at our destination, we were faced with maybe a 20 min. wait, which isn't too bad for the Buckhead area, but we heard that the wait is usually longer. The way that the parking is set up, we were able to pull right in front of the cafe and wait for our name to be called. Standing outside in Hotlanta isn't optimal. We were seated and the waitress asked for our drink selection. Our waitress Holly was really pleasant. When you patronize an establishment and you're met with exceptional customer service, that's always a plus! Who wants to spend their hard earned money at an establishment where they don't feel appreciated?

Holly was interactive with my little brothers and she exchanged friendly conversation with my parents and I. That was an immediate "check" in my book! There were a few downfalls, the restaurant was aired twice on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives", so they were out of a couple items (my dad wanted the shrimp and grits, but was unfortunately disappointed because they were out of it.) I almost wanted to get on my knees and pray that they weren't out of cheese, bread, or tomato soup!
The service was exceptionally quick because by the time we all decided what we wanted to order, the waitress was right there to write all of our orders down! It seemed like the food was right in front of us with the *snap* of a finger. My mom and brothers decided to start their day off with some sweet, scrumptious food!
My brothers ordered french toast, and my mom ordered a waffle with a topping of mixed berries and whipped cream! My dad and I decided to start the day with something a little more savory. After getting over the disappointment of no shrimp and grits, he settled for the biscuits and gravy. With the delightful image posted above (and yes I took that pic myself), I'm sure you can figure out what I ordered! Yep, you're correct, I ordered a grilled cheese and tomato soup (with a side of potato salad).
This was one of the most mouth watering, delicious grilled cheese & tomato soup that I have ever had the pleasure of consuming. (In a restaurant, that is, 'cause my mother makes a pretty mean grilled cheese too). The soup was fulfilling, and the smokiness and tart sweetness of the tomato soup had me plummeting my spoon back in the bowl for another sip. The grilled cheese was the perfect contrast to the tartness of the tomato soup.
I don't know how they did it, but the grilled cheese was perfect in every single way. It had a slightly smoky flavor from the grill marks, and the cheese had the perfect ooey-gooey moment (if you know what I mean). The bread soaked up all the flavors of the tomato soup as you dipped it in. The meal also came with a side of croutons, which was the perfect topping in my opinion!
I selected the potato salad as a healthier, cold, contrast to the soup. I had a bit of a dilemma...I was full after eating the soup and sandwich combo, so I was only able to eat a few bites of the potato salad! In my opinion, the potato salad was a little bland in comparison to what I just ate. I grew up eating my grandma's potato salad, so it's hard finding a potato salad that compares to hers.
Everyone else in my family raved about what they had to eat, so I would say that it was an overall success! My brothers practically licked the plate clean, and I was thinking about seconds. If you're looking for a great, family-owned, cafe to eat at, Joy's Cafe is the place to go! My only tip, get there early! Their food is so delectable, it goes fast!
